In many respects, however, computerization of Chinese will facilitate commercial functions, and the race is already on, among start-up firms and corporate giants alike, to produce the software of choice for the Chinese language market. The english term "Mandarin" refers to the northeastern Chinese dialect that China's rulers have long promoted as a unifying language. Within China this dialect is referred to as "standard speech" (putonghua); outside China, it may be called "country language" (guoyu) or simply "Chinese" (huayu). Most Taiwanese speak fluent Mandarin, as do most educated mainlanders. Large numbers of Hong Kongers, who traditionally speak Cantonese dialect, are brushing up their Mandarin for post-1997 PRC rule. Similarly, business and cultural ties with China and Taiwan are reinvigorating Mandarin usage among the twenty to twenty-five million ethnic Chinese throughout Southeast Asia. Mandarin has always been the language of high culture among the Chinese within China and abroad. It is now becoming the language of pop culture as well. Taiwanese and Hong Kong movies, television shows, and music formerly produced in dialects, like Cantonese or Hokkien, are increasingly made for distribution to the wider Mandarin market. The international success of Chinese artists such as filmmakers Chen Kaige (Farewell My Concubine) and Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern; To Live) adds to the allure of Mandarin among the young. Until recently the designation of Mandarin as the world's most spoken language was mainly due to the size of the population of China itself (1.2 billion and climbing). But now Mandarin may be poised to spread beyond the Chinese world as a language of commerce and influence among the elite and professional classes of Asia. The economic impetus is clear: Trade within the region is expanding twice as fast as Asia's trade with other regions. And if reformist policies are sustained, the growing China market stands near the center of those trade flows. China could also become Asia's largest source of tourist revenue. In 1995 PRC citizens represented the third largest group of Asian tourists, a relatively new and growing phenomenon. Title: How Children To Learn Well In Mandarin. Father Of Singapore Master Lee Kuan Yew Giving Chinese Parents Some Tips According to the Singapore News report on the 18th: Owing to changes in global environment, mandarin has become the essential tool in communication, On the 17th at the “Speaking Mandarin Through The Year” campaign, lee Kuan Yew call the attention of parents to focus on the importance of mandarin . Being the retired Prime Minister of Singapore , a person of very high profile and political influence remarked that mandarin is the common language of global Chinese , as the Chinese main stream culture, it’s not only used by 13 Billion s population in China , has become the essential tool in world communication. “ The prospect for the child is bright if he knows mandarin which will be useful in the child’s future” 李光耀鼓勵講漢語家庭的家長在日常生活中和孩子多講漢語,為孩子日後學習漢語打好基礎。 Lee Kuan Yew encouraged parent communicate with their children daily at home, laying a good foundation for mandarin learning when the child grow up. It would be easy for learning in university.Since Singapore many people can speak English well, the natural environment to learn English ( any time) is not a problem at all. He said more and more parents speaking English at home is the obstacle for their child learning mandarin. Therefore, in this mandarin speaking campaign the challenge is not with dailact at home but thecommon tendency of using English in the home Lee Kuan Yew said, since early 90 the the home use of Mandarin is decreasing to 40% now, on the other hand English has increased from 26% to 60 %. According to statistic Chinese forms 75% of Singapore population. He urged parents not to teach children dialect. “This will waste the resources’ and opportunity of learning English and Mandarin , moreover dialect pronunciation , vocabulary and syntax is not in unification with Mandarin, destroying the abilibility to learn up Mandarin properly. Why giving the child the unnecessary problem? Why not let children learn well in English and Madarin? MICHAELSNE TRASLATION FROM THE ORIGINAL TEXT.and my comment is 100% in agreement with what Lee Kuan Yew said. All my children spoke Mandarin at home, and they have done VERY well in University.Till today, sometimes I have to remind them better use English to state certain technical term for precise concept and meaning.

Mandarin will probably be the leading second language in near future.Learn Now.

According to a language expert, there will be fewer monolingual people, and English will no longer be dominant in the future; instead, it may share its leading position with other languges. There is opposition to English in both developed and developing nations. Evidence for the declining popularity of English is the growing unmber of non-English Web sites on the Internet. Although English is still popular as a second language, Mandarin will probably be the leading second language in the next ten years.
